Comparison of Identified Candida species from Normal Skin of Healthy Persons with Those of Patients in Intensive Care Unit

Abstract
Background:
@Encandida©Ï species is a normal flora on the skin and includes C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. guilliermondii, C. pseudotrpicalis, C. tropicalis, C. zeylanoides and so on C. species can cause candidiasis when the states of host are
deteriorated.
@ES Objective:
@EN The authors performed this study in order to compare the kind and distribution of C. species on the normal skin of healthy persons with those of patients in intensive care unit (ICU) who perhaps have changed normal microbial florae and
suppressed
immune function due to steroid, antineoplastics or antibiotics.
@ES Methods:
@EN This study was performed on 318 volunteers without evidence of cutaneous fungal infection including 143 healthy persons and 175 patients in ICU of Chung Ang University Hospital from January, 1992 to December, 1992 After culture on
Sabouranud's
glucose agar (SGA) media, C. species from SGA media were isolated and identified by culture in corm meal-T ween 80 media and sugar assimilation and fermentation tests using API 20C AUX strip system.
@ES Results:
@EN 1. The incidence of cutaneous normal flora of C. species was 10.5% (30 286) in healthy persons and 7.7%(27/350) in patients in ICU. 2. The positive culture rate of C. species in both groups were 11.3% and 7.9% in spring, 15.5% and 12.0% in
summer,
6.5% and 6.7% in autumn and 12.1% and 5.3% in winter, respectively. 3. The positive culture rate of C. species in both groups were 4.9% and 2.9% on the groin, and 5.6% and 4.9% on the foot (4th interdigital toe wed), respectively. 4. Among 57 C.
species, C. albicans (23), C tropicalis(3), C. stellatoidea(1), C. pseudotropicalis(1) and C, lipolytica(1) were identified in healthy persons, and C. albicans(20), C. stellatoidea(3), C. parapsilosis(1) and C. krusei(1) were identified in
patients
in
ICU.
@ES Conclusion
@EN The kinds of identified C. species were similar between healthy persons and patients in ICU. The kinds of identified C species were no significant difference between both groups. C. albicans was the most commonly identified C. species on the
normal
skin C. species was most frequently cultured in summer with high temperature and humidity, and in a 4th interdigital toe web.
